About SwingCville

SwingCville was established in May of 2009. Since then, we have grown to dozens of members, perform for many events, and threw national-level workshop weekends.

We started for many reasons:

  • We LOVE to dance just because its fun and silly and wonderful
  • Dance Education & Practice - we want to teach you to dance and we want to continue to learn more ourselves by bringing in outside instructors
  • Social Dance opportunities - a night out dancing is a GREAT night out
  • Hang out and have fun - because the dance community is a great group of people
  • Travel opportunities - because this is a GLOBAL community

Who We Are

Our Swing Cats work very hard to make Charlottesville's swing dancing scene incredible. Combined, they have decades of dance experience and are very active in the global lindy hop community. They work very hard to arrange dances, instruction, and resources for beginners and more advanced dancers. We love to talk about Lindy Hop, so if you're new to swing dancing, come find us, we'd love to get to know you!

2010 Retrospective

Our first full year as an organization has come to a close. When SwingCville started back in 2009, we just wanted to find some fun people to dance with. We had no idea it would become such a success; that is all thanks to YOU, the dancers, our friends, who share our love of Lindy Hop and keep coming back for more. Here’s a rundown of all the amazing things we’ve accomplished together this past year:

  • C'ville Savoy - Starting in March, we hosted teachers from around the region to give a 2-hour workshop prior to our monthly dance. Teachers included: Jay Mosher, Emily Wagoner, Lee Tucker, Crista Seipp, Chris & Holly Owens, Courtney Widger, John Ennis, Amber Smith, Z. Adilov, Victor Celania, Sam DuVal, & Michelle Tillery.
  • SwingC'ville Flight School - May 2010: Courtney Widger & Jason Vaughn taught us their high-flying aerials during a 1-day workshop. Co-hosted with the Swing Club at UVA.
  • Lindustrial Revolution - September 2010 with Andrew Thigpen & Karen Turman. We danced our nuts & bolts off! We even had so much fun that we're doing it again next year!

As a group, we believe Lindy Hop is a fun, entertaining way to raise money and awareness of issues in our community. It brings people together and excites the imagination. Here is a list of activities we have participated in in 2010:

  • Martha Jefferson Hospital "Celebration of Life" - to benefit cancer survivors. Performance with ACME Swing Mfg. Co.
  • "Masquerade" benefit for the Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle. Performance with ACME Swing Mfg. Co.
  • Renaissance School - took over PE class; choreographed show for benefit of The Haven (a local homeless shelter)
  • Raised 62lbs of food for the Emergency Food Bank from our Turkey Day dance
  • Collected $X for the Shelter for Help in Emergency at our Holiday Dance on Dec. 22nd

And now for a sneak peak at what is coming in 2011!

Thank you to all of our fellow dancers for making this such a great year! I encourage all of you to come back in 2011 and continue to help us grow.
